Chiefly the papers of Capt. Charles Hervey Townshend, shipmaster, historian, and genealogist, which he accumulated during his genealogical research in England and America. Includes papers of Hanna Draper Osgood Townshend (1882-1944), state legislator; and correspondence and other papers of her husband, Henry Hotchkiss Townshend, including correspondence regarding the Drake oil well as well as his activities with several New Haven social clubs; Abraham Bradley papers including inventories of estates of members of the Townshend family; French spoilation papers, including correspondence and records of payments to family members; Civil War letters (1862-1863) and related papers of James M. Townsend; and materials pertaining to the history of and improvements given to the New Haven harbor. Other persons represented include Isaac and Kneeland Townsend, James Mulford Townsend, Capt. Edwin S. Hitchcock, George H. Townsend, and Solomon Townsend.
